EducationI hold a Bachelor's Degree in French (with a minor in history) from Christopher Newport University.(I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.81 GPA.) I am also a certified ESL(English as a Second Language) teacher. This was completed through Tennessee Foreign Language Institute.
Experience***The tutoring services I am offering would be for primary school-age children.***
I spent three months (the Summer of 2011) living with a family in France and tutoring their two girls (ages 4 and 7) in English. During this time I was completely immersed in the French language and culture and spoke it on a daily basis. It was a wonderful experience and gave me the opportunity to see the French language and culture in the most natural setting.
After returning from my three months in France I immediately signed up to become certified to teach English as a second languge. Through this course I completed a 10-hour praxis during which I taught a class of local immigrants/refugees.
From October 2013 through May 2014 I was an English Teaching Assistant in Valence, France in primary schools (ages 6-11). As an assistant, I taught each class for approximately 30-45 minutes depending on their age and level. After assessing their levels, I catered the lessons to each individual class progressing as they grasped new vocabulary and grammar. I utilized a variety of tools (songs, chants, flashcards, games, etc.) to make the lessons fun yet productive. While the classes were conducted primarily in English, it was necessary to use French to convey certain concepts. In addition, I worked very closely with each classroom's teacher (in French) to decide what they wanted out of my time with them. Spending eight months in France and having to conduct all of life's activities in French gave me an even stronger understanding of French language and culture.
I very much enjoy working with children and watching the progress and grasp concepts. I don't think there is a more rewarding feeling. Prior to my time in France I volunteered at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in their ArtQuest section. Here, children can create their own works of art. I very much enjoyed helping the children discover their artisic side.
HobbiesMy passion in life is language and culture. It's quite obvious that I adore France and French, but I have a neverending thirst for knowing and understanding other languages and cultures as well. And that thirst for knowledge really extends into all areas of life. I never tire of learning. I also enjoy music, dance, reading, and writing.
