Last year, I was volunteered as a YMCA Literacy Tutor for 1st Graders. I scored a 24 on the ACT - but, that was ages ago! I want to be a tutor because it's something I'm great at. I can lay out a lesson and explain concepts in a way that anyone, no matter how educated, can understand them. I am an excellent communicator. I can listen to my student, understand what they aren't comprehending, and can develop a plan for how to get them up to speed. I know many little tricks to make the writing/reading process more efficient. For instance: Lesson 1 - When writing an essay, it is initially imperative to be able to understand what you are writing about before you begin writing. If you are writing about sleep patterns of infants, you must first research infants. Then, you must research different sleep patterns. Then, you can begin to combine the two topics together and understand what direction the paper should take. I have many resources available to me, through my university, that I could share with any student needing academic articles. After you have a general understanding of what you are writing about, we would move onto Lesson 2: Creating An Outline. I've taken many writing classes: Professional Writing, Creative Writing, Persuasive Writing. Not to mention the amount of papers I've done for my university. Because I've had to write and research so much throughout my college career, I have learned how to be a critical reader. I can teach anyone how to be both a proficient reader and writer, regardless of age.
